Diablo 4The Vessel of Hatred expansion may not have turned Mephisto's story on its head, but it did come with a plethora of additions and changes to the core gameplay loop that make the game much better than it was at launch. While it was a year-long project after Blizzard Diablo 4the new Spiritborn class of Vessel of Hatred, endgame content like Kurast Undercity and Dark Citadel, and additional skills for the base game classes all make the game more enjoyable. Spiritborn's OP Evade build is already catching a nerf, or rather a fix, but there are plenty of other powerful builds and items to look into – namely, Runewords.
With the release of Diablo 4Blizzard added gems as socketable items that improve stats for characters in a variety of ways, essentially creating better builds when choosing the right loadout. Gems were never meant to be full-fledged buildcrafting options for players, though, and instead, they provided small bonuses that could complete builds in need of some extra stats. Vessel of Hatred turns this concept on its head by introducing Runes and Runewords, essentially giving players a new way to transform their characters and what they can achieve.

Diablo 4's Runes and Runewords Explained
Diablo 4's Runes and Runewords offer a new creative outlet for creation
The concept of Runes and Runewords in and of itself is not new, ie Diablo 2 Already introduced in this series many years ago. However, the new Runes and Runewords completely change that some builds can be achieved in different ways. This system works based on the combination of two Runes, which produces a combined Runeword. One rune must always be triggered, while the other must always be “spending”, as some runes generate an offering and others consume it to activate powerful and unique abilities. For example, Diablo 4A druid can use a wizard's teleportation skill to partially solve its mobility problem.
Runes that generate offerings are called Runes of Ritual, and those that are expended are called Runes of Invocation.
This utility is not limited to powers, however, as some expendable runes display powerful abilities to take advantage of players. An example is the mage's meteor skill, which can do a decent amount of damage when triggered. Next will be the Om Rune, which activates the Barbarian's War Cry skill Diablo 4 As well as its enhanced node, giving players an incredible increase in damage and movement speed. It changes the path Diablo 4 Builds work on a basic level, and it's a great addition to replayability.
Why Diablo 4 Players Shouldn't Sleep on Runes and Runewords
For these reasons, Runes and Runewords in Diablo 4 Gems are the absolute best in terms of utility and power, though there's a catch: players can only have two sets of Runewords on a given character. Considering what these items do, it's only a fair tradeoff since some Runewords can build or break or possibly take it to the next level. For example, Runes like Vex and Xan would be great overall in most builds, with the former providing +3 to all skill levels and the latter providing both a critical hit and overpower to the user's next attack.
Another incredibly strong effect comes from Eom's eponymous Rune of Invocation, which reduces the active cooldown of all players by 0.25 seconds. It may not seem like a lot, but the Rune has a proposal requirement of 100, and then there is an additional mechanic called overflow – it repeats the effect of the Rune several times according to how many proposals players generated before spending it, improving the effect dramatically. These items are great features to include in the game and in the future Diablo 4 Expansions could capitalize on them by adding new ones and possibly increasing the current limit of two Runewords per character.
