I recently bought this $6 survival horror remake in the Steam Summer Sale because $60 nostalgia is a tough sell.

of 2023 dead space Remake and I have a difficult relationship. I've watched it multiple times at full price and walked away every chance I got, because despite all its graphical fidelity and gameplay updates, $60 is too much based on a nostalgic feeling I haven't seen since I was ten years old. But as it turns out, the dead space A remake for $6—90% off via the Steam Summer Sale is a much easier conversation for me to have.

dead space It was very positively reviewed when EA Motive shipped it back in early 2023, and I have no doubt it was good, at least not after those reviews came out. My hesitation had nothing to do with quality and everything to do with the strange tax we pay to revisit things we half remember. Six dollars, though—that sounds like highway robbery, and after a few hours in the game, I can confidently say that this game justifies that price and then some.

A remake is hard to sell on memory alone

Before getting to the wild deal at hand, it's worth acknowledging that remakes occupy a specific commercial niche, because they ask you to spend new-release money on an experience that, presumably, you've already done. Personally, I liked the original dead space When I played it in 2010 – I was definitely too young for it – but it never settled into my gaming pantheon like others from that period of my life did. I noticed really obscure corridors, a clunky system, and almost nothing else, which is a thin basis for a $60 purchase.

But that's the way to go with remakes; Despite the publisher's pitch that the original title is worth rebuilding and modernizing for hardware that can ultimately do justice, nostalgia can be a wildly unreliable currency. That said, I put the remake on my wish list and treated it like a rainy day snag — every time the sale knocked a few dollars off, I did the math and decided the discount wasn't enough yet. Now, though, discount dead space Absolutely absurd, and I can say two things for sure: dead space My co-sign is earned, and in this case, it's more than worth the price of admission.

The titular horror of the Dead Space remake earns its place

To be increasingly clear, I put a few hours into 2023 dead space Already, and it's great. The remake sharpens the original's focus on fear and horror in a way that feels pointed, and some of Fat's trims and nods to atmosphere define this game as part of the original trilogy in a way that the original alone didn't. USG Ishimura is one of the best haunted houses Medium has ever created, and Motive clearly understands that.

My hesitation had nothing to do with quality and everything to do with the strange tax we all pay to re-watch half-remembered things.

There is only confidence dead spaceThe mix of genres is the scare factor that many modern survival horror games have lost in their rush to redefine the genre. dead space It wants to scare you, and it builds almost every system around that goal with almost monastic discipline, but it never dismisses its boss fights and setpieces. And playing it in 2026, it feels like the things I took for granted a decade ago, that set it apart even in the original day, have been rediscovered here, at least in the AAA space.

Punching Necromorphs in Dead Space 2 (2011).

That might sound like a lot to unpack, but practically, I'd say dead space Its diegetic menus, procedural enemy placement, and razor-sharp audio design all stand out because of how legible everything feels, all serving the same unbroken sense of space. There are no obvious loading screens, and nothing here is bloated or updated for the sake of checklists, and the pacing rarely allows itself to breathe the way big-budget horror does. It's lean, deliberate, and scary, and I find myself rediscovering my own primal memories when I play it, rather than relating it to other, more “modern” survival horror experiences.

That sense of reinvention is the highest praise I can give this remake, because as far back as I can remember, I've always considered it. Dead Space 2 To become the top of the franchise; A near perfect enhancement of action, visual appeal, and gameplay design. I also preferred the famous controversial one Dead Space 3As was its cooperative campaign and sheer ambition, it was, in my mind, vastly underrated, even as its nuanced transactions and tenuous narrative remained indispensable. But as I play through this remake, I now see that this game is part of a surprisingly experimental trilogy—each game trying out three different tones—and I resonate with this first tone in each session.

Steam's Summer Sale is at its best

Of everything I've seen in this year's Steam Summer Sale, this is the steepest discount I've seen, but also the most rewarding, and that combination alone should recommend it for me. There's a special joy in buying the best, latest, fully featured game for about the price of a sandwich. It's all the more satisfying that, in this case, it turned that “maybe someday” into a hearty yes.

The cynic in me knows that these deep discounts are patient publishers monetizing the long tail of a back catalog. It comes true in this case – of 2023 dead space Didn't meet EA's sales expectations — but I don't care one bit, because the math works in my favor, and despite the quality of this remake, I don't need another one. Dead Space 2. Generally speaking, I like this industry to move forward rather than backward, so a two-year-old remake for $6 strikes me as a rare transaction where almost all the value flows to the player, not something I need more of next time.

Dead Space is worth every penny

To be fair to the remake, none of this is complaining about its original asking price, because by every objective measure, that's what it looks like. dead space That earned the sticker price. EA Motive built something faithful, polished, and terrifying, and the rave reviews it received in 2023 were fully deserved. Quality has never been something that stands between us.

USG Ishimura is one of the best haunted houses Medium has ever created, and Motive clearly understands that.

And I'm glad I had this experience, I really am. But the honest truth is that this industry often preys on nostalgia, and it certainly has a price limit. There are some exceptions (I'm only human), but for me, that ceiling sits a long way south of $60. At $6, however, dead space An easy purchase, probably the easiest I've made all summer; So far, Ishimura's revisit is worth every last cent.
