Subnautica 2 players are not happy about the immersion breaking immortal fish

Some players aren't happy with Subnautica 2's inept fish which marks a big departure from previous entries and shakes up the gameplay significantly.

The second Subnautica 2 update for May 2026 makes 11 changes to the game

Released on May 22, the game's second post-release update is also the largest to date by a significant margin, with an 11-item changelog that is 175% longer than the patch notes attached to Hotfix 1. Construction adds more in late May 2026. Subnautica 2 Silver resource locations in the early-game area simultaneously expand its late-game counterpart with additional resources of Troilite. The update also introduces some animal AI tweaks and bug fixes, while removing two crash triggers and improving performance on epic graphics settings, among other things.

Regarding behavioral changes to in-game animals, hammerheads will now ignore Subnautica 2 Tadpoles of players in the latest version of the game. Previously, the creatures were attracted to the submarine's lights, constantly following it and sometimes cluttering up the area around player bases. Hotfix 2 includes more Tadpole-related changes, providing several bug fixes to the modular submarine. This includes a fix for an issue where players could sometimes teleport to their base while driving, as well as an infinite-oxygen bug that could occur after dying of hunger or thirst while piloting it. The overall changes should make deep-sea travel feel more predictable and therefore more enjoyable.

Subnautica 2 EULA Relaxed After Fan Criticism; Ridicule is now fair game

Apart from the gameplay-facing changes, Hotfix 2 also brings modifications Subnautica 2's end-user license agreement, which has recently attracted fan scrutiny over some oddly restrictive provisions. The stipulation, barring players from using the game, went on to damage the reputation of Crafton, the game's publisher and parent company of Unknown Worlds Entertainment. The old provision was too broad to cover seemingly parodies or, to use a meta example, publicly mocking a game's EULA as overly harsh. That breadth may raise enforceability questions in several major jurisdictions that extend free speech protections to parody and criticism. Another thing left out of the new deal is all the fan-made requirements Subnautica 2 gameplay videos to include a clear disclaimer that Krafton does not endorse them; The updated EULA now makes that disclaimer implicit.

Unknown Worlds confirmed that more changes are in development to address community feedback regarding performance issues and creature balance. While Hotfix 2 is currently only available for PC players, Xbox Series X/S users are expected to receive it once the console verification process that has already begun is complete. Meanwhile, Subnautica 2 Hotfix 3 is expected to reach Steam and Epic Games Store users in the first half of June 2026.
